A duo formed by multi-instrumentalist K.M. (ARS MAGNA UMBRAE) and singer E. (CULTUS INTERITUM), THANATOREAN enters the black metal scene with a noteworthy debut album, “Ekstasis Of The Subterranean Currents.” In terms of songwriting and ability to evoke dark atmospheres, K.M.’s experience is there, but where ARS MAGNA UMBRAE are experimental just enough to make them an avant-garde black metal band, THANATOREAN show off a much more raw, aggressive and dissonant sound.
“Ekstasis Of Subterranean Currents” is a cavernous and catacomb-like black metal, illuminated by sinister melodic touches and propelled by roaring vocals. The atmospheres evoked, rarely so pernicious and oppressive, do not arise from melodic parentheses created for the purpose but are engraved in the riffs, which writhe like worms on a decomposing corpse.
As the album title suggests, rather than the classic exaltation of a wild and uncontaminated Nature, THANATOREAN are devoted to underground cults of Death, to the unfathomable depths of the afterlife, to man’s ancestral fear of dying, and at the same time to the exhilarating prospect of reaching, in the embrace of the pale reaper of souls, the final truth and inner peace.
