After debuting way back in 2012 with “The Stars Would Not Awake You,” Dis Pater’s TEMPESTUOUS FALL said goodbye to listeners a year later with the two long tracks featured on the “Converge, Rivers of Hell” album, which brought together all of the Australian musician’s then-active projects. It felt like a farewell, as Dis Pater had decided to incorporate the musical influences that characterized TEMPESTUOUS FALL and THE CREVICES BELOW into the sound of MIDNIGHT ODYSSEY.
Thirteen years later, however, TEMPESTUOUS FALL are back to life with “The Descent of Mortals Past,” which is not only the follow-up to “The Stars Would Not Awake You” but, more importantly, a reworking of the ’90s death/doom style in light of the maturity and experience gained with MIDNIGHT ODYSSEY.
Today, as then, the music is grandiose and romantic, built on breathtaking melodies, shining like white cathedrals rising in the darkness of the night. Dis Pater alternates deep growls and his unmistakable, emotionally impactful clean vocals, intertwined with simple yet powerful doom riffs enhanced by the orchestral grandeur of the arrangements.
The theme of “The Descent Of Mortals Past” is once again that of a journey into the afterlife, told through the voices of illustrious figures from Graeco-Roman mythology. Starting from the serene atmospheres of “Theseus – Encased In The Stones Of Hades” and the sumptuous melodies of “Psyche – Temptation Of The Divine” (feat. the incredible vocals of Alice Corvinus of SWORDS OF DIS), and moving on to the surprising, totally acoustic ancient-folk of “Orpheus – In The Dark Deathly Grey,” we reach the conclusion with “Aeneas – Guide Me Home,” one of Dis Pater’s most beautiful songs ever, the moving plea of a soul begging to find the way to the Underworld, where to finally rest.
If there’s a soundtrack to end our life journey and welcome death, this is it.
