Formed in 2020 in Athens, Greece, and consisting of a congregation of penitents lead by the mysterious Señora Dolorosa, JEHOVAH ON DEATH aim to inspire a new wave of “satanic panic” through their occult rock. Influenced by Spanish Catholicism, poetry, and music, as well as medieval beliefs and superstitions, the band invites penance through songs of love and death, richly embroidered with dark melodies and smoldering guitar solos.
“The name alludes to Yahweh/Yaldabaoth/The Demiurge promising swift retribution in vengeance against his enemies (Deuteronomy 41:32),” the band explains; “we want to portray the obscene acts of worshiping of the devout in clear light and in all its gory extremity. Whilst the band is considered blasphemous, it changes the source material very little and revels in its twistedness.”
Musically, comparisons with recent female-fronted acts like THE DEVIL’S BLOOD, BLOOD CEREMONY, JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES, SABBATH ASSEMBLY, JEX THOTH, and other legitimate offspring of the seminal COVEN are inevitable, but the Greek band’s roots actually go even further back in time, to the occult-tinged metal of BLUE ÖYSTER CULT, from whom JEHOVAH ON DEATH inherited the same masterful ability to create catchy yet sinister and haunting melodies.
Señora Dolorosa’s vocal performance is sumptuous, powerful and seductive in equal measure, capable of giving the compositions a religious and ritualistic edge that further enhances their occult-satanic connotations.
